“Wisdom begins in wonder.” Socrates

Havenschool is intended to be an open, democratic learning environment for students who have not been able to succeed in the standard school environment for a number of reasons - including, but not limited to bullying, a lack of personalised attention or because they have simply do not engage with their classes. It is founded on the belief that all people are capable of rational decision making and have an intrinsic desire to learn; therefore, it is not necessary to force them to participate in their own learning.

The school will aim to be full service by partnering with community organisations to provide staff, students and their families with educational, health and social services, such as a fully fledged health clinic that delivers primary general practice and dental services; a family relationships centre and community use of library and recreational facilities through out the day.

The school will be small, co-educational and have a high staff to student ratio. It will teach all compulsory school ages but will do so without the social interaction destroying practices of age cohorting and competitive assessment.

Freedom of expression and self-management will be encouraged through democratic management structures and self-led program planning. This will place a high level of responsibility in students to manage their own affairs and structure will exist to help them grow in this area.
